For those of you who are following along, we have not 1 or 2, but 3 INTERNS this summer! Last but not least, please welcome our newest CurlyRed graphic design intern, Emily McCormick (fun fact: Emily's sister Amanda is also interning for us, and they were both students of Mark's at Garrett College)!
1. Where do you attend school? What is your major?
I attend school at Garrett College and my major is Business & Information Technology: Graphic/Web Design.
2. What’s your dream career?
My dream career is to be an author. I'd love to be one of those gals that makes it big, but I have always said that as long as I change just one person's life with my imaginative worlds then it was worth it. How Graphic Design sort of fits into that dream is I have a deep appreciation for the interior design of a novel. Fonts, headings, graphics, layout, etc.
3. What do you love about art?
I love that art is subjective and has the adaptive range to be whatever it is that the creator wants it to be. Unlike most things, art does not have to fit into a specific set of boxes to be considered valid or on trend. It's completely unique to your tastes and preferences.
4. Why is graphic design a good fit for your personality?
Graphic Design is a good fit for my personality because I work best when I have the opportunity to go over my work meticulously. I am not the best at coming up with the best answer or outcome on the first try, so being able to double or even triple check ideas and designs as well as have the range to do something completely different before a client sees the final product has an immense appeal for me.
5. Why did you want to intern for CurlyRed?
I wanted to intern for CurlyRed because of the positive energy that Professor Mark had for his job in the classroom. Someone who wore their love for a career so blatantly was exactly what I wanted. It's inspiring to be around that and very contagious, which is something I think all beginner artists should experience.
6. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned up to this point as an artist?
That cutting material is important. Not every detail is a necessity; sometimes less is more.
7. How will this internship change the way you approach your career?
I am unsure exactly how this internship will change my approach to my career. What I do know is this is going to be a valuable experience, and that I am excited to see how I might possibly answer this question throughout my time here, for I am sure it will change.
8. Why do you think someone should choose CurlyRed for their creative needs?
Someone should choose CurlyRed for their creative needs for the same reason I chose to intern for them: their love for their job. Sometimes when a certain amount of income isn't guaranteed, it can kill the passion and make the task seem like a chore, which can discourage students and future clients. CurlyRed's team however never let that thought enter their minds, and it shows in their mindsets and in their work. Like I said, that type of energy is contagious to be around and it will be hard not to get hyped about what you are doing if you are in their presence.
9. What’s your favorite typeface and why?
My favorite typeface is Times New Roman. Basic? Yes, but it fits me perfectly. It is clean cut with just a little bit of the fancy edges that aren't too dramatic. Times New Roman also happens to be my default writing font for the books I write and has been for years, so that is another reason it is my favorite.
